CANOEING IN THE GEMEN FOREST ON THE DANUBE TRIBUTARIES
There are also special ways to explore the tributaries of the Geman Forest. We are the only ones in the country to transport canoes and kayaks to the tributaries of the Danube and to the shores of the Sió. Hikers can choose from four hiking trails according to their leisure time and fitness level. The starting and arrival point of the tours is always the Pörböly Ecotourism Centre. Here, hikers will also receive life jackets, hiking boots and waterproof barrels for carrying their packs, which are essential for hiking. If required, we can also provide a guide for water adventures.Hikers can gain an insight into the flora and fauna of Europe's largest floodplain forest. From Pörböly it is a 20-minute ride to the Forest Railway's Summer Pasture station, which is located directly on the banks of the Rezet Danube. The Rezéti and Veránka tours also start from here. There is no jetty at the landing or mooring place, so the shore can be very muddy due to the fluctuating water level. The Rezéti-Duna meanders between highly protected areas, so docking and disembarking on the banks is not allowed except in emergencies. Mooring and resting is possible at the resort at the north-eastern tip of Veránka Island and on the nearby reef. If you are lucky, you may also see protected birds (grey heron, eagle-owl, brown kite, black stork, great crested grebe), cooling deer and wild boar.
Rezeti tour (half-day tour):
Distance: by forest railway: 6km + by canoe: 7 km
Time: 4.5 hours
From the summer pasture, the hike starts in the tributary to the north, upstream. The left bank is the Veránka Island itself, which belongs to Bács-Kiskun County, while the right bank is part of Tolna County. The route passes by the Lassi Lakes, Lake Zsubrik and then turns back along the Szomfová delta of the forest railway, following the same direction as the river, and rowing gently back to Nyárilegelő.
Veránka tour (full day tour):
Distance: by forest railway: 6km + by canoe: 17 km
Time: 6 hours As with the Rezéti hike, the hike starts northwards, upstream from the Nyárilegelő. It takes about 6 hours to go around Veránka Island. Hikers will also pass by Cape Rider and the wild and scenic Senki Island as they bypass Veránka Island. Once out on the Danube, the hikers will have to meander downstream for about 3 km to the lower mouth of the Rezéti-Duna, where they will paddle back down the tributary to the starting point.
Danube Fishing Tour (for groups only):
Distance: by forest railway: 20 + 6 km, by canoe: 15 km
Time: 7 hours
After about 1.5 hours on the forest railway, hikers arrive at the starting point of the tour: the Gemenc-Danube shore. After launching the boats, the hikers will follow the Danube river towards Baja. If the water level is good, the tour also includes a small stretch of the Grébec-Holt-Danube. After paddling for about 15 km, the tour ends at the Nyárilegelő stop on the Rezéti-Duna.
Sió tour (for groups only):
Distance: by forest railway: 28 + 6 km, by canoe: 9 km
Time: 7.5 hours
The starting point of the tour is located west of Keselyűs, on the shore of the Sió, which can be reached after a nearly two-hour forest railway ride. Most of the tour follows the Gemencian section of the Sió, passing through the Keselyűs boat lock, which is crossed depending on the water level. After paddling along the Danube for about 2 km, hikers reach the Gemenc-Duna bank, where they take the train back to Pörböly. Other information. You can moor and rest on the reef above the resort. Water hikers must follow the instructions of the designated guide travelling with them, who must have sufficient experience and water skills. Everyone takes part in the trip at their own risk, and life jackets must be worn by non-swimmers and children under 14.
