The German Municipality of Baja, the Public Foundation for the Germans of Baja and the German Cultural Association of Baja, in consultation with the General Cultural Centre of the Germans in Hungary, decided to build an "Ulmer Schachtel", a dereglie in the original size of Baja.
The ship will serve a triple purpose:
1. It is a memorial to our ancestors, who in the 18th century, for the most part, migrated from southern and central Germany to Hungary on such ships and, with their skills and diligence, contributed significantly to the reconstruction of the country after the Ottoman period. The memorial will remind future generations of their origins and will also mark our commitment to our narrower homeland, Bácska.
2. It serves as a tourist attraction in Baja and Bács-Kiskun County, where many Germans still live in Hungary, but also many foreign visitors come to visit. As this Ulmer Schachtel is the only ship built in its original size in Hungary, we hope that it will attract many visitors to Baja.
3. Our main objective is to use this boat as a special teaching space, a so-called learning path, with a specific educational purpose. To help students to better understand the history and culture of the Germans in Hungary in history and ethnography lessons. In fact, the wooden building on board the ship can host groups of students and tourists, as well as individual visitors, with the aim of realising joint projects and exhibitions. Visits to the Ulm dereglye are possible by prior appointment.
