Born in Baja in 1825, István Türr served in Lombardy under Austrian occupation from the age of 16.
Influenced by the Hungarian War of Independence, he sided with the Italian Revolution. He organised a Hungarian legion and later fought alongside Garibaldi. Returning home after the Compromise, he worked for the country's cultural and economic rise. He is credited with the construction of the canal linking Sugovica with the Canal of San Francesco, and with the construction of the Corinth Canal and the Panama Canal.
On the bank of the Danube, at the mouth of the Sugovica, stands a monument named after him, with a beautiful view of the Danube bridge, which also bears his name, as well as the waterway and the Gemencian forest opposite. There is also a playground next to the lookout.
